    BABSON PARK, Mass. – The New England Basketball Coaches Association (NEBCA), founded in 1936, has announced that Southern Vermont College senior tri-captain Joe Karnik of Castleton, N.Y. has been named to play in its annual Division III Senior All-Star Game this Sunday, April 18, at Babson College, with all proceeds benefitting the Coaches vs. Cancer campaign.

Lesley was led by guard John Sanchez with 22 points, while the Mountaineers were led by guard Lance Spratling with 20 points and seven rebounds.

He helped the Mountaineers to a 2-0 week, defeating Lesley 66-58 (OT) and Mitchell 86-74, and clinching the #4 seed and the right to host Lesley in the quarterfinal round.

    ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Becker College has claimed the top seed for the 2009-2010 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Men’s Basketball Championship, which begins with quarterfinal matchups on campus sites the evening of Tuesday, February 23. The Hawks (17-8 overall) earned the top spot in the upcoming NECC tournament after posting a 13-1 conference record.

The win extends SVC’s winning streak to four and earned the right to host a first round game against fifth-seeded Lesley University on Tuesday, February 23.

    BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College men’s basketball team put on yet another show, as it won its third game in a row blocking the visiting New England Collegiate Conference Lynx of Lesley University from victory in overtime 66-58 in the Field House Thursday night. The win gives SVC a sure spot in the NECC playoffs next week as it set a team record for blocks in a game with 15. It was senior day as the crowd cheered for forward Joe Karnik and guard Chris Holland, who played their last regular season game in the Field House.

    BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College men’s basketball team prevailed over visiting New England Collegiate Conference rival Newbury College 77-75 in a barnburner that had the 300-plus crowd on its feet until the final buzzer. Southern Vermont led by as much as 22 in the first half, but the Nighthawks scored 47 in the second half to cut the lead to two points with :05 left to play. SVC was led by junior guard Lance Spratling who had a team-high 25 points in the win.

    BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College men’s basketball team hosted New England Collegiate Conference foe the Wheelock College Wildcats winning 78-75 Thursday night in the Field House. Southern Vermont fended off a Wildcat rally that cut a 13 point SVC lead down to one point at the break. The driving force for SVC was senior forward Joe Karnik who had 10 points in the first seven minutes of the game, on two triples and two monster dunks.

Cenicola averaged 16.0 points per game, 9.0 rebounds per game, 1.0 assist per game and 3.0 steals per game. He shot 27% (5-for-18) from the floor, 22% (2-for-9) from behind the arc and 100% (4-for-4) from the charity stripe.

    BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College men’s basketball team played host to New England Collegiate Conference opponent the Becker College Hawks falling behind early and succumbing to an 87-72 loss Saturday afternoon in the Field House. SVC junior guard Lance Spratling led all scorers with 35 points and pulled down 11 boards for a double-double. The Hawks were led by junior forwards Rajai Leggett and Matt Petrides who each posted 22 points in the victory.

    DANBURY, Conn. – The Southern Vermont College men’s basketball team, leading by four at the break, let the Colonels run wild with a 23-0 run to open the second half as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team came from behind to defeat SVC, 80-68 Thursday night at Feldman Arena. Guard Lance Spratling had a monster double-double with 30 points and 12 rebounds for the Mountaineers.

    ROOKIE OF THE WEEK — Southern Vermont freshman guard Derrick Cenicola (Hamilton, N.Y.) helped the Mountaineers to a 1-2 week defeating Newbury 65-63 in NECC action. Cenicola averaged 14.0 points per game, 7.0 rebounds per game, 1.7 assists per game, 0.3 blocks per game and 1.7 steals per game. He shot 32% (12-for-38) from the floor, 38% (10-for-26) from behind the arc and 73% (8-for-11) from the charity stripe.

Senior forward Joe Karnik led the Mountaineers with 15 points and the Panthers were led by freshman guard Jake Wolfin who tallied 18 points and five assists.

Spratling also added eight rebounds, five assists and one steal for the game. For the week, Spratling went 63% (12-for-19) from the field and 83% (10-for-12) from the free-throw line.
