CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Against tough competition in the first day of the Mass. Institute of Technology Scramble, the Southern Vermont College men's volleyball team lost 3-0 to both Elmira College and Hunter College in Friday evening matches.
SVC is now 12-11 on the season with the pair of losses. Elmira improved to 22-8 while Hunter moved to 15-12 with a day's split.
Southern Vt. finishes its regular season with the second day of the MIT Scramble on Saturday, taking on the hosting Engineers at 11 a.m. and then Bard College at 1 p.m.
Elmira 3, Southern Vt. 0
The Soaring Eagles, ranked No. 10 by the latest AVCA coaches poll, defeated the Mountaineers with set scores of 25-22, 25-16, and 25-23.
SVC senior Anthony Barahona (Eagle Rock, Calif.) led the team with 11 kills, notching just two hitting errors on 26 swings for a .346 hitting percentage; he added six digs and both a solo and assisted block to his line. Junior Scott Fitzgerald (Fort Edward, N.Y.) registered eight kills and seven digs to go along with two block assists and another solo stuff. Senior setter Anthony Ayala (Pico Rivera, Calif.) set up 26 of the 29 Mountaineer kills while junior libero Florentino Escovedo (Fresno, Calif.) tabbed a side-best 14 digs in the effort.
Hunter 3, Southern Vt. 0
The Mountaineers fought and kept each game close, but the Hawks were able to sweep the match with set scores of 25-21, 25-21, and 25-18.
With 14 kills, Barahona again led the team in the category while adding a team-best 10 digs for the double-double. Junior Keven Walley (Pico Rivera, Calif.) followed up with six kills to go with four digs, and junior Anthony Contreras (Norwalk, Calif.) put down five kills on just nine attempts to register a .444 hitting percentage with a single error. Ayala popped up 32 assists and added a pair of digs while Escovedo chipped in with an additional eight digs.
