MARCY, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College men's volleyball team swept its two matches at the State University of New York Institute of Technology Invitational Saturday afternoon, first winning 3-2 over the hosting Wildcats before defeating Keuka College 3-1.
With the wins, the Mountaineers move to 3-3 on the season.
SVC defeated SUNYIT with game scores of 25-23, 18-25, 24-26, 26-24, and 15-7 before beating Keuka with set scores of 25-15, 26-24, 21-25, and 25-22.
Game 1: Southern Vt. 3, SUNYIT 2
Mountaineer senior Anthony Barahona (Eagle Rock, Calif.) totaled match-highs of 17 kills and 17 digs against the Wildcats while junior Joey Dighton (Riverside, Calif.) tallied 11 kills and seven block assists. Junior Keven Walley (Pico Rivera, Calif.) had 10 kills and 13 digs as senior setter Anthony Ayala (Pico Rivera, Calif.) assisted on 45 of the 51 SVC kills.
Junior Scott Fitzgerald (Fort Edward, N.Y.) notched 10 kills, and junior libero Florentino Escovedo (Fresno, Calif.) popped up 16 digs in the day's opener.
Game 2: Southern Vt. 3, Keuka 1
Against the Storm, Barahona again led the team, this time notching 14 kills, six digs and three block assists. Walley added 10 kills and a match-high 18 digs while Ayala facilitated the offense with 36 assists.
Dighton notched eight kills and only one attacking error on 15 swings (.467), and Fitzgerald chipped in with an additional nine kills and eight digs. Escovedo added 11 digs on the defensive end.
Southern Vermont returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 8, when the Mountaineers visit Wentworth Institute of Technology for a 1 p.m. match.
