3-1 Loss at Emmanuel Ends Men's Volleyball's Opening Weekend

BOSTON, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College men's volleyball team concluded its first weekend of the season, being defeated at Emmanuel College 3-1 Sunday at Jean Yawkey Center.

The Saints took the match with set scores of 25-14, 23-25, 25-16, and 25-19.

Southern Vermont was led by juniors Scott Fitzgerald (Fort Edward, N.Y.) and Keven Walley (Pico Rivera, Calif.) who recorded 12 and 11 kills apiece, respectively. Senior setter Anthony Ayala (Pico Rivera, Calif.) notched 36 assists while junior libero Florentino Escovedo (Fresno, Calif.) had a game-high 11 digs.

Emmanuel junior Zach Whitermore (Whitehall, Pa.) topped all players with 13 kills, and sophomore Kevin Gallegos (Los Angeles, Calif.) totaled a match-high 42 assists.

The Mountaineers (1-3, 1-0 NECC) are back in action Saturday at the SUNYIT Invitational with a 1 p.m. match against the hosting Wildcats and a 3 p.m. tilt against Keuka College. Emmanuel (1-0) welcomes New York University next Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
