jake figueiredo selected as second SVC track & field athlete of the week

BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College outdoor track & field head coach Kathleen Newton '04 and her staff have named freshman Jake Figueiredo (Wethesfield, Conn.) as the team's second Athlete of the Week following the Mountaineers' meet at Smith College this past Saturday.

Figueiredo became the second SVC athlete to qualify for May's Division III New England Championships as he posted a new personal-best mark of 6.55 meters in the men's long jump at Smith. That saw the freshman place third overall at the Pioneer Invitational and was just .16 meters from tying the program's all-time record in the discipline.

"Jake has been working hard and had his sights set on qualifying for DIII's at Williams [College]," Newton said of her selection for the week. "He works on breaking down his steps to improve his technique during his jumps. He is positive, very coachable, and is always eager to become more precise on his approach. His next goal is qualifying in the triple jump."

Figueiredo set a new personal record in the triple jump at Smith on Saturday as well—chalking up a mark of 12.46 meters for a new program best. Additionally, he participated in the men's 100 meter dash and put himself at fourth on SVC's all-time record list for that distance with a time of 12.29 seconds.

The Mountaineers are slated to continue their season improvements this upcoming Saturday at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Upstate Classic.
