BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to four with a 3-0 sweep over Sarah Lawrence College Thursday night at the Campbell Sports Center in non-conference action.
The Mountaineers took the match with set scores of 25-10, 25-18, and 25-7 to improve their season mark to 8-6. The Gryphons fall to 0-17 on the year with the loss.
SVC's attacking was fairly tame for the first two game, recording hitting percentages of .120 and .207, respectively, before exploding with a .538 percentage in the third with the help of just two hitting errors. SLC, adversely, struggled on offense as the hosts totaled four kills and 12 hitting errors on 40 swings.
Southern Vt. junior Joey Dighton (Riverside, Calif.) led the team with seven kills, posting just two hitting errors on 12 attempts for a .417 hitting percentage to go with three service aces and two block assists. Junior Florentino Escovedo (Fresno, Calif.) followed with five kills, adding three aces and four digs to his line.
Senior setter Anthony Ayala (Pico Rivera, Calif.) led all players with 23 assists for the Mountaineers while junior Scott Fitzgerald (Fort Edward, N.Y.) had a match-best nine service aces, adding three kills on just four attempts. Freshman libero Andrei Flumian (Del Mar, Calif.) tied the match-high of six digs in the win, and senior Anthony Barahona (Eagle Rock, Calif.) had four kills on six attempts and added five digs.
Flumian was matched on the Sarah Lawrence side by freshman libero Justin Heftel (Spokane, Wash.) who also had six digs, and junior Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India) had two kills, three digs and a block assist for SLC.
Southern Vt. returns to New England Collegiate Conference action Saturday with a 2 p.m. match at Elms College while the Gryphons turn to a home exhibition with the College of Staten Island on Saturday, slated for 1 p.m.
