Men's Soccer Tops Vermont Tech 2-1 in Double Overtime

RANDOLPH CENTER, Vt. – It required more than 90 minutes of play, but the Southern Vermont College men's soccer team pulled out a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Vermont Technical College Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play.

Both teams notched a goal in the first half before the final 50:34 of regulation went scoreless. Neither side could punch one through in the extra sessions until 2:13 into the second overtime period when SVC got the game winner to go.

The Mountaineers are next in action on Saturday, visiting Green Mountain College for a 4 p.m. non-league showdown. They move to 2-2 overall on the year and even up the short all-time series against the Knights at 1-1, avenging a 5-2 loss to Vermont Tech last year.

SVC junior Paddy McGovern (Cheshire, England) got Southern Vermont on the board in the 40th minute of the match with his third of the year, and Mountaineer freshman Daniel Rangel (San Antonio, Texas) knocked home his second of the season in the latter overtime for his first career game winner.

Southern Vermont freshman goalkeeper Chris Jimenez (Newark, N.J.) turned away five VTC shots in the win (2-2).

Vermont Tech struck first to get the upper hand late in the opening stanza, scoring in the 39th minute for the 1-0 advantage. The lead would not last long, however, as SVC tied it up just 59 seconds later. Southern Vermont freshman Connor Kristiansen (Shelton, Conn.) played a terrific through ball from about 50 yards out, and McGovern was able to finish for his team-leading third goal of the year.

The Knights had a 5-2 edge in shots through the closing 45 minutes of regulation, but both keepers came up with the necessary saves to send the game into overtime. The first extra period went scoreless before Rangel put the game away with his second of the season. He collected a feed from classmate Jake Figueiredo (Wethersfield, Conn.) and knocked it past the VTC keeper for the Mountaineers to celebrate the thrilling win.
