NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Southern Vermont College dropped a non-conference men's soccer contest at the College of New Rochelle Wednesday night, the Mountaineers falling 3-1 in the Blue Angels' first-ever home game.
CNR put up a lone goal in the first half for a tight lead at the break, and the hosts then padded their advantage with a pair in a five-minute span midway through the second. The Mountaineers ended the shutout with just over a minute left on the clock, but it would be too-little-too-late as SVC dropped to 1-2 on the year.
Southern Vermont is now off until next Wednesday, September 14 when the Mountaineers visit Vermont Technical College for a 4 p.m. start.
The SVC tally came from freshman Daniel Rangel (San Antonio, Texas), his first collegiate goal being an unassisted score in the 89th minute.
Mountaineer freshman goalie Chris Jimenez (Newark, N.J.) made eight saves in net during the loss (1-2).
A penalty kick 15 minutes into the match gave the Blue Angels the early lead, one that would be sustained through the halftime horn. CNR converted on a corner kick in the 61st minute for what ended up being the game winner, and the hosts added to their cushion five minutes later on a pass in from the right side.
Southern Vermont prevented New Rochelle from posting its second straight shutout with just over a minute left to go, making the most of a failed Blue Angel clear attempt as Rangel found the back of the net for his first time as a Mountaineer.
