Men's Soccer Edges SUNY Cobleskill 2-1 in Overtime

COBLESKILL, N.Y. — A well-executed set piece gave way for Southern Vermont College to defeat SUNY Cobleskill 2-1 in overtime Tuesday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Cobleskill's Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.

Mountaineer freshman Anthony Dominguez (Los Angeles, Calif.) got on the end of the free kick taken by classmate Nikolas Joseph (Coventry, Conn.) to score his fourth goal of the year, and first game winner, in the 95th minute. Joseph had earlier put home his third score of the season on a through ball from senior captain James Tschinkel (Freehold, N.Y.) to give SVC a 1-0 upper hand in the first half. The marginal Southern Vermont lead lasted all the way to the 80:58 mark of the match when the Fighting Tigers tied it up to send the game to the extra session.

The Mountaineers (2-9) now turn back to New England Collegiate Conference action, hosting Becker College on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. league matchup.

SVC's win is the first over Cobleskill since 2011, giving the Mountaineers a 3-2 edge in the all-time series.

The visitors got on the board first when Tschinkel sent the ball into the box where Joseph was able to finish for the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Neither side could find the back of the next through the remainder of the half nor first 36 minutes of the second stanza as SVC clung to its slim advantage. Finally, Cobleskill got its equalizer with just over nine minutes to go on a blast from about 40 yards away from goal.

Each side came close to going ahead through the end of regulation, forcing one another's goalies to come up with big, point-blank saves. Neither team could slip one past, however, as the game went into overtime. Joseph found Dominguez on the free kick, the freshman duo partnering up to notch the winning tally in the 95th minute.

SVC freshman keeper Noah Chani (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) made seven saves on the afternoon for his second collegiate victory in net.
