Men's Soccer Topped 3-0 at Regis in NECC Action

WESTON, Mass. — The Southern Vermont College men's soccer team lost 3-0 Saturday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest at Regis College.

Regis opened the game with seven consecutive shots during the first 16 minutes of play, none of which found the back of the net. Attempts by junior midfielder Renato Rosas (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida), freshman Amandio Ferreira (Dorchester, Massachusetts) and sophomore forward Dillon Lanctot (Somersworth, New Hampshire) all either went wide, high or were denied by Mountaineer freshman goalie Cody Gross (Fair Lawn, New Jersey).

The Mountaineers raced down to the other end of the field, hoping to open up the scoring in the contest. Pride sophomore goaltender Manny Calderon (Bristol, Connecticut) was able to turn away Mountaineer junior Daveon Lamar Logan's (Los Angeles, California) header attempt off a crossing pass to preserve the tie. Calderon faced two more shots during a two-minute span as Southern Vermont continued to apply pressure.

After missing on two shot attempts earlier in the game, the third time was the charm for Lanctot who opened the scoring during the 28th minute after an attempt by senior teammate Nana Kwarteng (Milford, Massachusetts) hit off the goalie; the rebound in front of the net was corralled by Lanctot who rifled a shot that hit off the post and ended up in the back of the goal. Lanctot's tally was his third of the season and gave the Pride a 1-0 advantage.

Six minutes later, Regis struck again after a pass from 30 yards out by sophomore midfielder Trevor Hamilton (Winchester, Massachusetts) found freshman defender Brendan Plasczynski (Bristol, Connectivut). Plasczynski struck the ball to the opposite post for his sixth of the season, upping the Pride lead to 2-0.

The Mountaineers tried to cut the deficit before the break, but attempts by Logan and senior Erik Argueta (Pico Rivera, California) were both rejected by Calderon.

Rosas added his second goal of the season during the 70th minute after Lanctot crossed the ball from the bottom left side of the box to the top center of the penalty; Rosas fired the ball immediately to the bottom left corner of the net, just out of the reach of Gross for the 3-0 final.

Stopping four shots for the win while only playing the first half, Calderon moves to 4-9 in net on the season. Gross turned away nine Pride shots in the loss (1-13-1).

The victory gives Regis a slight 3-2 all-time series advantage, having now won the last three meetings between the two.

The Mountaineers (2-13-1, 1-4-1 NECC) have the week off before their final regular season game next Saturday, November 1, a 1 p.m. home match versus Newbury College that will also serve as SVC's Senior Day. Regis (7-10, 3-3 NECC) also concludes its regular season schedule next Saturday, visiting Mitchell College for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
