LEICESTER, Mass. — An early goal preceded Southern Vermont College senior Erik Argueta (Pico Rivera, California) adding a pair of insurance tallies en route to a 3-0 shutout victory at Becker College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer action at Alumni Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Mountaineers crack the win column with the second career clean sheet for freshman keeper Cody Gross (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) who turned away five Hawk shots on the day for his first collegiate victory (1-11-1). BC freshman goalie Karl Cameron (Jacksonville, Florida) made five saves in the loss (2-12).
Southern Vermont took the scoreboard early on with a goal by sophomore Marc Massena (Port-au-Prince, Haiti), his first of the year being unassisted in the ninth minute of action. Argueta then added his second of the season 12 minutes later, another unassisted goal to put SVC up 2-0.
Less than six minutes into the second half, the Mountaineers padded their lead when Massena fed Argueta who registered his third goal of the 2014 campaign for a comfortable advantage. The SVC defense was able to keep the Hawks out of the net the rest of the way to even the all-time series between the two programs at 6-6-1 after the teams played to a 1-1 tie a year ago.
Shots on the day were even with each side taking 12 while Southern Vermont owned a 5-3 edge on corner kicks.
The Mountaineers (1-11-1, 1-2-1 NECC) are back on the road Saturday as they visit Wheelock College for a 1 p.m. start, their last non-conference game of the season. Becker (2-12, 0-3 NECC) also plays next on Saturday, traveling to Regis College for an 11 a.m. NECC tilt.
