BENNINGTON, Vt. — Mitchell College scored three times in the second half to pad its lead en route to a 4-0 win at Southern Vermont College Saturday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer contest at Everett Field.
MC sophomore Andrew Nigro (East Granby, Connecticut) notched the first two Mariner goals with senior captain Jordan Derosier (Bristol, Connecticut) assisting on one and then scoring the last two of the day.
Chances were there for the SVC side throughout the match, the first being early in the opening half when sophomore Andrei Flumian (Del Mar, California) had a slick run through the defense, only to put the potential go-ahead shot off of the crossbar in the sixth minute of action. Later in the half, senior Erik Argueta (Pico Rivera, California) blasted a shot that was turned aside by a diving save from MC senior keeper Ramazan Sinani (Waterbury, Connecticut).
The Mariners got on the board at the 14:36 mark with Nigro's first when he made a nice flick over SVC freshman keeper Cody Gross (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) for the 1-0 advantage off a crossing pass by senior Ryan Goodwin (Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania).
The Mountaineers tried to claw back from a 1-0 deficit until late in the second half when Nigro put home a shot from the middle of the box to increase the Mitchell lead. Derosier followed up with a pair of his own tallies to cement the four-goal lead for the Mariners.
Sinani recorded three saves to improve his season record to 6-6-1 while Gross made nine stops in the loss (0-11-1).
Southern Vermont's (0-11-1, 0-2-1 NECC) next game comes Tuesday when the Mountaineers visit Becker College for a 4 p.m. NECC contest. Mitchell (6-6-1, 2-1 NECC) looks ahead to its Monday non-conference tilt at home, a 3:30 p.m. start against Wheelock College.
