BENNINGTON, Vt.- On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon at Everett Field the New England College Pilgrims outmuscled Southern Vermont to a 4-1 victory. The Southern Vermont Men's Soccer team has now fallen in two straight, after a quick 2-0 start to even its record at 2-2.
Southern Vermont got on the board quickly as they have in their previous two wins. Sean Moore headed a cross from Tommy Youngblood in the back of the net, only 5:05 into the match. The goal was Moore's third of his career and first of the 2011 season.
Unlike in previous wins this year however, Southern Vermont didn't put another goal in the back of the net. Instead two minutes later Pilgrims Eric Hall ripped a shot from just inside of half field that chipped Mountaineers goalkeeper Brenden Shea. The two goals held for the remainder of the first half sending both teams to half with a 1-1 tie.
The second half was all New England College's though. Pilgrim Aaron Kolb led NEC with two goals and an assist. Seven minutes into the second period Kolb drove a ball across the box that found Zak Harris' head and redirected the ball to the net. Three minutes later Kolb scored on a free kick to push the NEC lead to 3-1. Kolb put the finishing touches on the game when he took a pass from Julian Yourawski and placed the ball in the side of the net.
New England College dictated most of the play, as the Pilgrims outshot SVC 29-12 and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. The game was a physical match as the teams combined for 27 fouls, and were carded three times.
Southern Vermont returns to action Wednesday afternoon when they host Sage College at 4:30PM.
