CASTLETON, Vt. - Off to a 2-0 start in 2011 the Southern Vermont College Men's Soccer team was slowed up by a strong Castleton St. squad Wednesday night. The Mountaineers traveled to Castleton where they fell 4-0 in their first defeat of the season.
Trevor Kotrady (North Clarendon, Vt.) scored a pair of goals and
Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) stopped all three shots that came
his way to preserve a Castleton's 4-0 shutout of Southern
Vermont.
Southern Vemont had a solid chance to get on the scoreboard first
when Pierre
Massena (West Milford, N.J.) broke through the Spartan defense
and settled a through pass. Massena took one touch and shot, but
Castleton goalie Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) cut down the
angle and turned the shot away.
Kotrady (North Clarendon, Vt.) broke through to make it 1-0
during the 18th minute on a fantastic individual effort. The junior
striker took a feed from the midfield area up to the right flank,
eluded a single defender and split two more before unleashing a
low-liner just inside the far post.
Two minutes later Zac Conlogue (Farmington, Maine) scored his first
goal of the season on a penalty kick. Conlogue settled a loose ball
inside the penalty area off a Castelton corner kick, he then
struck a shot toward the goal that was illegally handled by a
Mountaineer defender to set up the free shot.
In the 47th minute of play, Kotrady showed off his speed to push
the Spartan lead to 3-0. Southern Vermont's Nick Haggerty
(Wynantskill, N.Y.) tried to work a give-and-go with Massena, but
the play just missed and Castleton quickly attacked on the counter.
Freshman Dameon Young (Fairfax, Vt.) corralled a pass and deftly
slipped a through ball out in
front of Kotrady who outpaced a pair of Mountaineer defenders to
reach the pass first. Kotrady played one touch to his right and
nestled a soft shot just inside the far post.
Connor
Anniello (Scotland, Conn.) stopped six shots in just under 70
minutes for the Mountaineers, before giving way to Brendan Shea
(North Providence, R.I.) for the final 20-plus minutes.
The Spartans carried play for much of the evening, outshooting
their guests 29-7, while holding an 11-0 advantage in corner
kicks.
Castleton evens its record at 1-1-1, while Southern Vermont falls
to 2-1.
Southern Vermont hosts New England College Saturday at 1 pm, while
