Men's Soccer Pummels the Wildcats 7-0 in NECC Action

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College men's soccer team completed its 2010 regular season play with a crushing win over New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opponent the Wheelock College Wildcats 7-0 Friday. The Wildcats finished up 0-16 overall and 0-7 in the league, while the Mountaineers are 7-10 and 3-4.

Freshman EJ Patch made 13 first-half saves for Wheelock before junior Ben Lewis had four stops in the final stanza during his collegiate goalkeeping debut. The hosts limited Southern Vermont to only one goal over the final 63:43, and the Wildcats held even with the Mountaineers during one 32-minute segment of the game by firing off as many shots - seven - as the visitors.

Juniors Brett Clatworthy and Connor Murray and sophomore Chris Hansen each had a goal and an assist for Southern Vermont, while senior Dave Gage turned in a pair of helpers. Senior Aaron Eschler worked the first half for the win before freshman Charles Lee made four stops in the second stanza.

Murray headed home a Hansen corner kick after 1:01 had elapsed for the eventual winner, and Hansen tallied off of a Clatworthy left-side cross that made its way through the penalty area to the right portion of the box during the seventh minute. Clatworthy one-timed home a Gage centering feed in the 11th minute, and an own goal off of Clatworthy's corner kick provided the visitors a 4-0 advantage at 15:52.

The Mountaineers closed out the first-half scoring in the 22nd and 27th minutes before tallying again in the 65th minute, circulating the ball well in the second stanza.
