Defensive Lapse Costs Mountaineers

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The Southern Vermont men's soccer team allowed six goals in a lapse of defense on the road in non-conference play against SUNY-Cobleskill Tuesday. The 6-0 loss drops the Mountaineers squad to 2-12-1 overall and 1-4 in the NECC. 

Offensively for the Mountaineers freshman midfielder Nick Haggerty (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park HS) had three scoring opportunities but could not find the back of the frame. Freshman midfielder Zack Reilly (Palmyra, VA/Fluvanna County HS) added two shots in the effort.

SVC, was out-shot 20-6, allowed Fighting Tigers freshman forward Manadou Diallo to score three goals and freshman midfielder Oladele Akinyode to score two in the loss. Also scoring for SUNY-Cobleskill was sophomore midfielder David Gardner, he also assisted Diallo on his third and final goal in the 87th minute of play. 

Southern Vermont sophomore goalkeeper Aaron Eschler (Gloversville, NY/Broadalbin-Perth HS) allowed four of those goals in 75 minutes of play making eight saves on the day. Captain sophomore goalkeeper Elias Skiff (Durham, NY/Cairo-Durham HS) played the remaining 15 minutes for the Mountaineers giving up two goals and not making a save. 

Skiff also played midfielder for SVC in the first period. He launched a shot from close range into the hands of a diving SUNY-Cobleskill freshman goalkeeper Travis Hall who had five saves.

Southern Vermont closes out the season on the road against New England Collegiate Conference foe Newbury College (3-14 overall and 1-4 in the NECC) Saturday, October 25. Kickoff is at 3:00 p.m.
