Hamlet Grabs 2nd NECC Men's Hoops Player of the Week Honor

BENNINGTON, Vt. — The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced on Sunday its weekly awards for the period ending February 8, 2015 with Southern Vermont College junior DeShawn Hamlet (Hartford, Connecticut) picking up the Men's Basketball Player Rookie of the Week honor.

Hamlet has now taken home the conference's top laurel two times this season and four times in his collegiate career. The Mountaineers swept this week's awards as freshman Daemond Carter (Forestville, Maryland) was recognized as the NECC Rookie of the Week for the third time this year.

Hamlet had a week to remember for the Mountaineers, helping them stay perfect in NECC action with a pair of wins. The junior first dropped a career-high 38 points in just 17 minutes Tuesday against Newbury and then followed up with 28 Saturday against Mitchell; that gave Hamlet an even 1,000 collegiate points, making him the 10th SVC player to reach the milestone. He shot 66.7 percent from the floor over the week to average 33 points per game, going 18-20 from the free throw line across the two contests. He added eight boards and 2.5 steals per game, pulling down 10 rebounds Saturday for his sixth double-double of the season.

Southern Vermont is on the road for its next game, visiting Becker College on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. conference tip-off. A win will lock up the right to host the NECC semifinal and championship rounds in the postseason tournament.
