SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Southern Vermont College dropped a road non-conference men's basketball contest 95-75 Thursday night at Union College at the Viniar Athletic Center.
Union sophomore forward Ryan Whelpley (Olean, N.Y.) posted career highs with 15 rebounds and 14 points to lead the Dutchmen as they improve to 3-5 on the season while the Mountaineers fall to 6-2.
Sophomore forward DeShawn Hamlet (Hartford, Conn.) led SVC with 11 points, and sophomore captain Antoine White (Germantown, Md.) and freshman Rayshawn Taylor (Silver Spring, Md.) scored 10 points each. Hamlet had a team-best seven rebounds, and Taylor added three assists. Sophomore captain Dolapo Olugbile (Laurel, Md.) chipped in with seven points and six assists.
Union freshman Kevin Weckworth (Randleman, N.C.) scored 20 points, and freshman Deshon Burgess (Scottsdale, Ga.) added 16 with eight rebounds. The Dutchmen also got 15 points each from senior Keith Callies (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Terell Winney (Scotia, N.Y.) with Winney dishing out four assists.
The Dutchmen led 41-36 at halftime, featuring 11 from Wentworth. Both teams were an identical 36.1 percent (13-for-36) shooting in the first 20 minutes. Union upped the lead to 11 at 54-43 with 16:40 left to play in the second half after a three-pointer by Callies.
The Mountaineers pulled to within seven at 67-60 with 9:59 left on a layup by freshman Eddie Mack III (Hartford, Conn.), but Union went on a 14-2 run in the next 3:48 and never trailed by less than 15 the rest of the way. The Dutchmen stretched the lead to 20 at 87-67 with 4:03 left and went on to keep that margin for the 95-75 final.
Union shot 82.1 percent from the line, making 32-of-39 free throws, and shot 41.5 percent from the field while holding the Mountaineers to 35.1 percent shooting. UC had a 53-44 rebounding advantage for the night.
Southern Vermont returns to action Saturday, Dec. 21 at 6 p.m. against Penn State- Harrisburg in the first day of the Rotary Holiday Classic hosted by Hood College in Maryland. The Dutchmen are off until after the winter break when they start Liberty League action at home against St. Lawrence University on Jan. 10 at 8 p.m.
