Men's Basketball Dealt Close Conference Loss, 68-64 by Newbury

BENNINGTON, Vt. – Two Newbury College men's basketball players accounted for 40 of the team's points in a tight 68-64 Nighthawk win at Southern Vermont College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action.

Newbury's four-point halftime lead held throughout, despite the Mountaineers closing to within two towards the end of the game.  With 48 seconds remaining and the Nighthawks up by two, senior Tim Young (Brockton, Mass.) went to the line for two free throws.  Young missed both, but Newbury was able to grab the rebound.  Young then made a jumper after a Nighthawk timeout to ultimately seal the win.

Southern Vermont sophomore captain Travis Severs (Bennington, Vt.) helped ignite the Mountaineer momentum off the bench in the first half, getting all seven of his points in the period.  It helped close the gap, but Newbury was able to hold off the SVC surge and came away with its second NECC victory of the season.  The Nighthawks held a slight advantage on the boards, securing 44 rebounds to Southern Vermont's 40.

Mountaineer senior captain Taeshon Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) led the team with 19 points and 14 rebounds.  Young led all players with 21.  Newbury's senior Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass.) followed with 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds; six of his boards came on the offensive end of the floor.

Johnson and fellow captain Jermaine Campbell (Bridgeport, Conn.) each had a game-high of four assists on the afternoon, while SVC freshman Evan Thompson (Rossford, Ohio) saw the most action of his young collegiate career, recording a personal-best 10 points in 31 minutes.

The Mountaineers (0-9, 0-2 NECC) visit Mass. College of Liberal Arts Thursday in non-conference action for a 7 p.m. rematch from earlier in the season; the Trailblazers took the first meeting, 98-86, in the first round of the Tri-State Shootout at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  The Nighthawks (4-5, 2-0 NECC) take a month off for finals and winter break, returning to action January 8th with an 8 p.m. NECC matchup at Becker College.
