BENNINGTON, Vt. – Tuesday evening the Middlebury College Panthers showed a well balanced attack to defeat the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers 107-51. The Panthers which entered the game as the number two team in the country had twelve players tally points while three were in double digits. Mountaineer, Robert McQueen led SVC in the defeat.
In the first five minutes Middlebury ran out to a nine point advantage, and never allowed Southern Vermont to lead in the game. SVC did cut the gap to 10 with eight minutes remaining in the first half. However, Middlebury outscored SVC 23-9 in the final minutes of the half to take a 48-24 halftime advantage.
In the second half it was all Middlebury again as the Panthers continued to improve its advantage. In the second frame Middlebury scored 59 points and held SVC to 27.
McQueen had 14 points and eight rebounds before he fouled out with twelve minutes left in the game. SVC leading scorer Taeshon Johnson who entered Tuesday's game averaging 26 points per game was held to eight by the Panther defense. Travis Severs scored nine points for the Mountaineers.
Dean Brierley led Middlebury with 20 points as teammate Peter Lynch chipped in 19. Also, in double figures was Hunter Merryman. The Panthers had 22 assists in the game and pulled down 59 rebounds.
Southern Vermont drops to 0-4 in the 2011-12 campaign while the Panthers improve to 5-0. Southern Vermont will host the Tri-State Shootout this weekend at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
