BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College men's basketball team cruised past New England Collegiate Conference foe the Eagles of Daniel Webster College 84-69 on Saturday night. SVC was led by the hot shooting of sophomore guard Derrick Cenicola who unleashed six triples and finished with 23 points.
The win gives the Mountaineers a 7-5 overall record as well as a 2-1 NECC record, while the Eagles fall to 7-4 overall and are 2-1 in Conference play.
SVC shot an astounding 50% from the field in the first half and notched 50 points before the break (50-29). The Mountaineers out-rebounded the Eagles 50-29, committed fewer turnovers (17-13), scored 24 points off of DWC turnovers, and dominated the paint scoring 40 of its 84 points in close range.
The Mountaineers junior Taeshon Johnson finished with 20 points and junior Ben Naaktgeboren had 18 points and 12 boards for the double-double. Senior Lance Spratling rounded out the SVC box with 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Senior guard Chris Hanson led the Eagles with 17 points, including four three's, and Keith Speed, Daris Crosby, and Chris Voukides all finished with 13 points apiece respectively for Daniel Webster.
The Mountaineers are slated to host in-state rival Castleton State College on January 11th. The tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
