ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced on Monday its first batch of weekly awards for the 2017 baseball season with Southern Vermont College freshman Nick Santoro (Syracuse, N.Y.) being selected as the league's Rookie of the Week for the period ending February 26, 2017.
Santoro had a great performance in his first collegiate game this past Friday as he reached base on all four plate appearances in a backend-win at Gallaudet University. That was during an SVC doubleheader sweep of the Bison which saw Southern Vermont start the season at 2-0 for the first time since the 1988-89 season—a year in which the team was a member of the NAIA.
The Mountaineer freshman was 2-2 with a double in Friday's second matchup, and he also worked two walks at the dish. Santoro scored three times and batted in a fourth run to help SVC down GU 8-1.
Santoro and Southern Vermont are back in action this upcoming Saturday with a twin bill at SUNY Maritime slated to begin at 12 p.m.
