Baseball Asst. Coach Hisert Selected for 3rd Hall of Fame Classic

BENNINGTON, Vt. – Receiving a chance to relive his glory days on the diamond, Southern Vermont College assistant baseball coach Robby Hisert was selected to play in the 2013 Baseball Hall of Fame Classic. Despite not being able to get the game in during this past weekend's rain storms, it was the third time Hisert had been picked to play in the Classic.

While the Mountaineer coach was not able to share the batter's box with past Major League greats such as Ricky Henderson, Jim Leyritz and Benito Santiago, and hit against the likes of Goose Gossage and Rollie Fingers, they still had the chance to meet and chat baseball in the locker room of Cooperstown's Doubleday Field.

"Being around the former MLB guys and Hall of Famers is a really cool and humbling experience," said Hisert. "Just hanging out and talking baseball with them is a great experience."

This was the fourth MLB Alumni event for which he has been selected to play, all due to his past participation with the US Military All-stars Heroes of the Diamond. He was on the winning team for each of the three previous games, going 4-7 at the plate including a home run on his first pitch at Cooperstown.

Hisert was set to be on the 2013 team managed by former Toronto Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston, the first African-American skipper to win a World Series. The team captained by former MLB knuckler Phil Nierko and comprised of Henderson, Leyritz, Will Clark and Dimitri Young, amongst other notable Hall legends, was slated to face off against the team headed by former Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox. Cox's team captain, legendary Goose Gossage, headed the lineup card that included Santiago, Al Levine, Jeffrey Hammonds and Mark Whiten.

"It's a bummer we didn't get to play," continued Hisert, "but instead we went to the Hall of Fame and all the players did a meet-and-greet with fans, including myself. It ended up allowing a lot of families and kids to get to meet players rather than watch from a distance."

This year's Classic was scheduled to be held during Memorial Day weekend instead of the usual Father's Day weekend and carried an armed services atmosphere. Along with Hisert and fellow US Military All-Star Heroes of the Diamond player Blake Helm were three soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y. – David Arthur, Jason Dighton and Jason King.
