Baseball Bested at Daniel Webster, 8-3

NASHUA, N.H. – Southern Vermont College was bested by Daniel Webster College 8-3 Tuesday afternoon at Harvey Woods Field in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) baseball action as Eagle senior Greg Dubela (Stratham, N.H.) became the first pitcher in Daniel Webster history to start a season 6-0, tossing seven innings of three-hit ball and allowing one earned run.

Dubela tied the program record for single season wins as Kory Kiro (Goffstown, N.H.) posted a 6-1 mark in 2011. Dubela struck out three and walked two, giving up one run in the sixth.

Darrik Marstaller (Spofford, N.H.) belted a two-run triple for the winners, knocking in three on the day. Kyle Brigham (Hudson, N.H.) added two hits including an RBI double, and Elliot Kilgore (Milford, N.H.) had two hits and knocked in a run.

Senior Corey Armstrong (Bennington, Vt.) and senior Dave Northup (Richmond, R.I.) knocked in runs for the Mountaineers (11-20, 5-10 NECC). Freshman right-hander RJ Pingitore (Amsterdam, N.Y.) took the loss on the mound (0-2) allowing three earned runs on five hits over four innings.

DWC forged ahead with two in the first as Brigham doubled to score Marstaller and later came home on a Kilgore single. Marstaller upped it to 3-0 with a single to score Aaron Richards (West Warwick, R.I.) in the fourth.

SVC got on the board in the top of the sixth with Armstrong's single that plated sophomore shortstop Chris Nicastro (Cranford, N.J.), but DWC answered in the bottom of the frame as Richards belted a double that scored Devin DeCarteret (Pelham, N.H.), who had singled and stole second.

A Rich Lizotte (W. Warwick, N.H.) sac fly in the seventh made it a 5-1 game, and after SVC pushed across an unearned run in the top of the eighth, the Eagles pulled away with three in the bottom half keyed by Marstaller's triple to knock in two and a Brigham single that followed.

Northup added his pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth for the third Mountaineer run.

The Eagles improve to 20-7 overall (13-2 NECC), marking the third-straight season head coach J.P. Pyne's club reached the 20-victory plateau, the only 20-win seasons in program history. DWC also stayed a game ahead of Mitchell for first place in the NECC with three league games remaining for both clubs.

The Eagles are back in action Wednesday as they host Fitchburg State University at 3:30 p.m., and SVC visits Wesleyan University Wednesday at 4 p.m.
