BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College baseball team hosted NECC opponent the Daniel Webster College Eagles winning 8-4, avoiding the series sweep, Sunday afternoon at Epstein Field. The Mountaineers were led by sophomore Keith Diotte who went 2-for-4 driving in three runs and scoring twice.
SVC improves to 11-17 overall (5-7 NECC), while DWC falls to 15-13 overall (8-4 NECC).
Junior right handed pitcher Adam Northup (3-3) got the complete game win on the hill for the Mountaineers, striking out seven and walking four in nine innings of work.
The Mountaineers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore Eric Wells slapped a double to left field sending sophomore Pat Warrington home after he reached on an error.
In the second inning the Eagles regained the lead with a two run homer to right center by freshman Rich Lizzotte to make it 2-1. Southern Vermont quickly regained the lead when Diotte smoked a double down the left field line that drove in two runs to make it 3-2 SVC. Diotte found his way home when senior Brett Pawlak crushed a single to left center to make it 4-2. Warrington gave the Mountaineers a good cushion with a two run home run over the right field fence to make it 6-2 heading into the third inning.
The Eagles scored one run in each the fourth and the fifth innings to make it 6-4. The Mountaineers made it 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Diotte slapped an RBI single to left field.
Southern Vermont would score one more run in the eighth when Pawlak single to center field sending Diotte home from third.
Eagles freshman Zack Hurley (1-2) took the loss as he walked three and struck out three, while giving up four earned runs in three innings of work.
Pawlak finished the day 4-for-5 with two RBI’s for SVC. Rounding out the box for the Mountaineers was Warrington, Wells, and freshman Corey Armstrong who each had two hits apiece.
Freshman Elliot Kilgore led the Eagles going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
SVC is back in action on Tuesday, April 27th, when it faces non-conference foe Castleton State College on the road, with the first pitch at 4:00 p.m.
