BENNINGTON, Vt. – For the second time this season, Southern Vermont College senior Jordan Welch (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) has been named the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week as announced by the league on Monday for the period ending October 2, 2016.
The Mountaineer was the fourth SVC runner to cross the line at Saturday’s Keene State College Invitational, helping the team take fourth overall with her time of 22:56. That was good enough for a split mark of 7:24 per mile and helped break her previous personal best on a 5000 meter course by a staggering 3:05.
Welch was joined in collecting league honors by Bennington College junior Annika Kristiansen (Keene, N.H.) who took the NECC Runner of the Week award for the second time this year for Southern Vermont to sweep the women’s cross country accolades. Kristiansen led SVC at the Keene Invitational, crossing the line at 20:37 to take 16th place and help the Mountaineers rank fourth as a team. That time in her hometown was 1:02 faster than any 5k mark she had previously posted this season and was just 14 seconds shy of her personal best.
