JOHNSON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College women's cross country team partook in Saturday's Johnson State College Invitational, placing third overall while continuing to progress through the season.
A pair of Mountaineers finished in the top 15 of the tough, 80-runner field as Southern Vermont tallied 86 team points. Clarkson University easily won the meet, posting 20 points with seven runners placing in the top 10.
SVC next takes the short trip down Route 7 to Williamstown, Mass. for Williams College's Purple Valley Classic next Saturday, September 24; that 5k at Mount Greylock Regional High School is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

A pair of Bennington College juniors were at the head for SVC on Saturday, Isabella Poulos (Milwaukee, Wis.) being the first Mountaineer to cross the line for the first time in her career; she finished 12th overall with a time of 22:10, taking 11 seconds off her mark from last week for a new personal record. She was followed by Bennington classmate Annika Kristiansen (Keene, N.H.) who wasn't far behind at 22:29 to land at 13th overall.
Southern Vermont senior captain Shelby Whitman (Bennington, Vt.) was third for her team with a mark of 24:13 as she shaved a second off her time from a week ago. Classmate Skye McGuire (Mechanicville, N.Y.) was next for the team, crossing at 25:12. The seniors kept rolling through for the Mountaineers as Emily Lesure (Cheshire, Mass.) took a whopping 1:52 off her time from last week's Castleton Invitational for a 26:02, and Jordan Welch (Schuylerville, N.Y.) was right behind her with a 26:03; Welch, who did not run last week, took 1:47 off of her mark from the season-opening meet on September 3 for a new personal best.
Sophomore Morgan Arleth (Berlin, N.Y.) was next for SVC with a 26:16 showing, and classmate Morgan Kaeppel (Vernon, Vt.) crossed after her with a time of 28:09-- one that was 48 seconds ahead of that which she posted last week. Sophomore Bailey Bradbury (Grants Pass, Ore.) ran her first-ever race as a Mountaineer, coming in at 29:16 while senior Kaylee Cross (Lewis, N.Y.) finished at 31:31.
