CASTLETON, Vt. — With three runners placing in the top 10, the Southern Vermont College women's cross country team took third overall at the 2015 Castleton University Invitational on Saturday.
SVC saw four of its eight entries set personal-best times, three of those being first-time runners for Southern Vermont. Junior captain Shelby Whitman (Bennington, Vt.) took 24 seconds off her time from last week's 5,000 meter race to finish third at 22:46, and Bennington College sophomore Annika Kristiansen (Keene, N.H.) crossed sixth overall at 23:00 in her first collegiate meet as a Mountaineer.
Southern Vermont junior Schyler McGuire (Mechanicville, N.Y.) crossed the line 10th in the field of 49 participants with a 23:58 showing to help SVC take third as a team, only nine points behind SUNY Canton for second. Isabella Poulos (Milwaukee, Wis.), another BC sophomore, was fourth for Southern Vermont at 24:58 in her first collegiate competition, and Mountaineer senior Emily Freling (Schenevus, N.Y.) was next for the team as she took 1:11 off her time from last Saturday to come in at 26:45. Junior Emily Lesure (Cheshire, Mass.) had the biggest improvement for the team from a week ago, finishing 2:07 faster at Castleton with a new personal-best mark of 27:43.
SVC will look to build upon its success at the Johnson State College Invitational next Saturday, September 19.
