Shelby Whitman Claims 4th NECC Runner of the Week Award

BENNINGTON, Vt. – Adding to a number of accolades accumulated over the weekend, Southern Vermont College women's cross country sophomore Shelby Whitman (Bennington, Vermont) was named the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Runner of the Week for the period ending November 2, 2014 as announced by the league on Monday.

Whitman is being recognized as the conference's Runner of the Week for the fourth time this year after winning the women's 5000 meter NECC Championship at Stanley Park on Saturday. Her first-place finish was the first for a Mountaineer at a conference title meet in program history as she finished with a new personal record of 20:26. That mark sees her climb up to second on the all-time SVC 5K record list, being only behind head coach Kathleen Newton's 20:07 from 2002. Whitman also took home the 2014 NECC Runner of the Year award and an All-NECC First Team laurel with Saturday's winning performance.

Whitman and the Mountaineers now turn to this Saturday's Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship back at Stanley Park on an elongated 6000 meter course.
