WESTFIELD, Mass. – Nearing the close to the 2014 season, the Southern Vermont College women's cross country team saw four runners participate in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championship Saturday at Stanley Park.
Of the four Mountaineers who competed in the 6000 meter race, three were running their first career events of that distance. SVC was led by sophomore Shelby Whitman (Bennington, Vermont) who finished with a time of 24:59, putting her at second on the Southern Vermont all-time 6K record list behind head coach Kathleen Newton's 24:09 from the 2002 NCAA Regional.
Next to finish for SVC was sophomore Schyler McGuire (Mechanicville, New York) who crossed at 27:16. She was followed for the Mountaineers by senior Emily Freling (Schenevus, New York) who jumped onto the all-time SVC 6K record list with a 28:54 showing, good enough for seventh on that list. Senior Tenzin Dhekyong (Amherst, Massachusetts) rounded out the team at 30:21.
Williams College took home the team title with 48 overall points, topping second-place University of New England which finished with 60 points. Middlebury College placed third as a crew with 85 points on the day. WC freshman Rebecca Delacruz-Gunderson (Lake Forest Park, Washington) was the individual champion with a final time of 22:15.
Newton and select Mountaineers will cap the season next Saturday at the NCAA Regional Qualifying meet, a 6K to be held at Williams.
