SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College women's cross country team concluded its regular season schedule Saturday at the Western New England University Golden Bear Invitational with two Mountaineers running to personal-best times.
SVC was led by sophomore Shelby Whitman (Bennington, Vermont) who crossed the line just one second off her personal record with a time of 20:50 on the 5000 meter course. Her next teammate to finish was classmate Schyler McGuire (Mechanicville, New York) who came in at 21:55.
Senior Tenzin Dhekyong (Amherst, Massachusetts) was the third Mountaineer to finish, beating her previous best time of 27:20 with a 25:42 showing. Senior Emily Freling (Schenevus, New York) was next for Southern Vermont at 26:22 while sophomore Mallory Cano-Scribner (East Montpelier, Vermont) rounded out the team's top five at 33:52. Sophomore Victoria Cotter (Yonkers, New York) also set a new personal record, crossing the line Saturday at 34:01, just over two minutes faster than her previous top mark.
Roger Williams University was the overall team champion with senior captain Hannah Zydanowicz (Newington, Connecticut) leading all runners at a 19:16 clip. Salve Regina University and Colby-Sawyer College finished second and third, respectively, as a team. The Mountaineers were 16th in the field of 22 squads, beating out Newbury College, the only other New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) team at the meet.
The Mountaineers are now off until the NECC Championship, a 5K race taking place Saturday, November 1 at Stanley Park in Westfield, Massachusetts.
