KEENE, N.H. – On a wet Keene State College 5000 meter course, the Southern Vermont College women's cross country team saw tremendous results from its six participants with five runners setting new personal records Saturday morning at the Keene State Invitational.
Mountaineer sophomore Shelby Whitman (Bennington, Vermont) was the first member of her team to cross the finish line, coming in with a time of 20:49; that mark was 1:15 faster than her previous best and vaults her up to third on the all-time SVC 5K record list, just 42 seconds off the program's top time set in 2002 by head coach Kathleen Newton.
Classmate Schyler McGuire (Mechanicville, New York) was next to finish for Southern Vermont, completing the course in a time of 21:50. Third for SVC was senior Emily Freling (Schenevus, New York) who took almost two minutes off her previous best for a 25:22 showing.
Senior Sarah Lampro (Otis, Massachusetts) finished fourth for the Mountaineers with a time of 30:17, also more than two minutes better than her previous best. Sophomore Mallory Cano-Scribner (East Montpelier, Vermont) finished her first race of the season at 31:13, almost three minutes better than any time she posted during her freshman year to round out SVC's top five. Sophomore Victoria Cotter (Yonkers, New York) finished Saturday's race at 36:02, 23 seconds faster than her previous best.
SVC finished 10th overall in the 14-team field, beating Wheelock College, the only other New England Collegiate Conference team that competed at the invitational.
The hosting Owls were the best squad on their home course, taking the overall team title with five runners placing in the top 10. Brandeis University placed second overall with the help of individual champion and sophomore Maddie Dolins (Highland Park, Illinois) who crossed with a time of 18:46. Springfield College rounded out the top three team finishes.
The Mountaineers will take next weekend off to recover and prepare for the Western New England University Golden Bear Invitational on Saturday, October 18, a 5K race slated to start at 10:30 a.m.
