CASTLETON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College women's cross country team started its 2014 season Sunday at the Castleton State Invitational and saw great potential during the meet.
SVC sophomore newcomer Shelby Whitman (Bennington, Vermont ) was first across the line for the Mountaineers with a time of 22:56 (13th overall) while team and classmate Schyler McGuire (Mechanicville, New York) was right behind with a 23:04 finish (14th overall).
Colby-Sawyer College was the team champion with sophomore Emily Lopez (Lincolnville, Maine) leading the team with a 21:02 second-place overall finish. Castleton finished second as a team while New England College was third overall, paced by sophomore captain Abby Shafer (Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey) who was the first runner to cross the line with a time of 20:52.
Mountaineer senior Tenzin Dhekyong (Amherst, Massachusetts) was third to finish for the team with a 28:54 showing while senior Sarah Lampro (Otis, Massachusetts) was fourth for SVC with a 32:53 finishing.
Next up for Southern Vermont is the team's Mountaineer Invitational home meet next Saturday, September 13 on the SVC campus with start time scheduled for 11 a.m.
