Women’s Volleyball Downed 3-0 at Mitchell in Season Finale

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Southern Vermont College concluded its 2016 women's volleyball season Saturday afternoon at Yarnall Athletic Center, falling 3-0 to Mitchell College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action.

The hosting Mariners took the day with straight-set scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 25-21.

SVC (5-20, 0-8 NECC) was led offensively by freshman Tay Phillips (Stephentown, N.Y.) who had 10 kills to go along with her five digs. Senior captain Brin Goldman (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) had 15 assists, 11 digs, two aces and five kills her final collegiate contest while sophomore Lizzy Bench (St. Petersburg, Fla.) tallied a match-high 18 digs to go with her three kills and two service aces. Mountaineer freshman Sarah Billow (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) notched eight digs, five kills and three assists in the effort.

Goldman finished her career with 479 kills, ranking herself fourth on the all-time SVC record chart. Her 644 digs puts her at third in that category, just seven shy of the second-place spot, and her 332 assists places the captain at fifth in program history for helpers.

Mitchell fell into early holes in each of the first two sets but dug out quickly. In the second set, Billow served SVC out to a 5-0 advantage before the Mariners recovered. Mitchell pulled ahead behind a 5-0 run, and the Mountaineers never got closer than two the rest of the way.

The Mariners got off to a good start in the third set, serving for three aces and recording a kill en route to a 5-1 lead. The Mountaineers kept it close, however, and later led 17-15 following consecutive kills by Billow and Phillips. Six-straight points by MC broke the game open before a final kill ended the game for Mitchell.
