Women's Volleyball Splits Home Tri-match, Falling 3-1 to Daniel Webster Before Sweeping Green Mountain 3-0

BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College women's volleyball team hosted its first tri-match since the fall of 2012 on Saturday at the Mountaineer Athletic Center, falling 3-1 to Daniel Webster College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play before sweeping Green Mountain College 3-0 in non-league action.

The middle match of the day saw DWC down GMC by a 3-0 margin as well for the Eagle squad hailing from New Hampshire to sweep the event.

The Mountaineers (4-15, 0-3 NECC) are next in action on Thursday with a 7 p.m. NECC tilt at Elms College while Daniel Webster (13-6, 3-0 NECC) heads to Regis College on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. battle between the last two teams in the league without a Conference loss. Green Mountain (0-10) will line up with DWC again in its next contest, that match being on Friday at 4 p.m.

Two players climbed up their respective program's record lists during the afternoon, one being SVC senior captain Brin Goldman (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) who amassed 27 total digs to now rank third on the Mountaineers' all-time chart with 582. Daniel Webster junior setter Nicole Beard (Shelton, Conn.) moved up into second in DWC assists history, now having 1,418 career helpers after popping up 55 on Saturday.


Daniel Webster 3 – Southern Vermont 1
The day had the potential to be a marathon outing as the very first set needed to go to extra points before SVC won it by a 27-25 edge. The Eagles came back to take the next three, however, closing out their third league victory of the year with game margins of 25-17, 25-19, and 25-17.

Mountaineer freshman Tay Phillips (Stephentown, N.Y.) charted team-bests of 11 kills and 20 digs in the effort while Goldman had 18 digs, 23 assists and six kills. Bennington College freshman Gaby Oropeza (Riverside, Calif.) had another 18 digs for SVC in addition to her seven assists, three kills and two service aces. Sophomore Lizzy Bench (St. Petersburg, Fla.) registered 17 digs and three assists against the Eagles, and freshman Sarah Billow (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) notched nine kills and 10 digs in the opener.

Daniel Webster junior Hannah Koehler (Bedford, N.H.) led all players with a career-best 20 kills, and senior captain Brooke Marcotte (Nashua, N.H.) followed with a career-high of her own as she recorded 15 kills to go along with her five digs. Beard assisted on 49 of the 56 Eagle kills and popped up 12 digs defensively while senior captain Madeline Roulier (Pittsfield, Mass.) had a match-best 25 digs and 10 kills on the attack. Junior Courtney Sheyenne Warrington (Oceanside, Calif.) also tallied 18 digs and a match-high five service aces in the victory.


Daniel Webster 3 – Green Mountain 0
Daniel Webster rolled its momentum into the second match of the afternoon and took care of Green Mountain with frame scores of 25-6, 25-7, and 25-9. DWC put up a .353 team hitting percentage in the sweep, and its 33 aces from behind the service line set a new team record for a three setter.

Koehler notched another match-high in the kills column with five for Daniel Webster while adding a pair of blocks, and junior Kaitlyn Mitchell (Voluntown, Conn.) chalked up 12 assists, five aces and three kills. Junior Rebecca Hoffman (Andover, Mass.) had a team-best five digs to go with her four kills and match-best nine service aces while freshman Delany Ruiz (Meriden, Conn.) registered seven aces, three kills and two digs.

GMC senior Torie Cowell (Rochester, N.Y.) had three kills and an ace to go with her match-high nine digs while sophomore Sandra Parra (Tucson, Ariz.) tallied two kills, two digs and a pair of service aces. Freshman Taleana Trammell (North Fort Myers, Fla.) popped up three digs defensively, and classmate Julia Harcourt (Nottingham, N.H.) notched two digs and a kill.


Southern Vermont 3 – Green Mountain 0
The Mountaineers downed Green Mountain with game scores of 25-4, 25-13, and 25-16 to cap the day.

Goldman had match-bests of nine digs and six kills while adding 12 assists and three aces to her line. Oropeza chipped in with another six kills, three assists, two digs and a season-high eight service aces, and Billow provided six aces of her own to go along with her three digs and solo kill. Bench recorded another six aces in the win as the Mountaineers had a collective 25, that being the most they've registered in a three-set match since September 25, 2010 against Johnson State College.

Cowell landed three kills for the Eagles while also putting up three digs and three aces. Trammell led the team with five digs as Harcourt tallied three digs, a kill and a solo block in the effort.
