Women's Volleyball Edged 3-2 in Non-conference Play at Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – Despite scoring one more total point than its opposition, the Southern Vermont College women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought contest at SUNY Cobleskill Tuesday night, 3-2, in non-conference action.

The hosts needed extra points in the opening set to win it 27-25 before SVC tied the match with a 25-21 second-game victory. The Mountaineers grabbed the upper hand with another 25-21 win in the third, but the Fighting Tigers were able to push the night to the decisive fifth set with a 25-22 upper hand in the fourth.

Southern Vermont battled to extend the frame once again, only to drop the final stanza by a 16-14 margin as Cobleksill won the first of two meetings between the teams this season.

SVC (3-9) next hosts an exhibition match on Thursday, welcoming Hudson Valley Community College to the Mountaineer Athletic Center for a 7 p.m. first serve.

Southern Vermont senior captain Brin Goldman (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) led her team with 15 kills, adding 15 digs and eight assists to her line. Freshman Sarah Billow (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) followed with eight kills while popping up 11 digs on the defensive end. Sophomore Michelle Urkevich (Troy, N.Y.) had a team-high 16 assists, and she also notched six digs, four service aces and two kills on the night.

Mountaineer sophomore Lizzy Bench (St. Petersburg, Fla.) racked up a team-best 33 digs in the effort while also notching three aces and two kills, and Bennington College freshman Gaby Oropeza (Riverside, Calif.) had another 10 digs and an ace against the Fighting Tigers. Freshman Tay Phillips (Stephentown, N.Y.) chalked up five kills, five digs, and three total blocks while junior Julia Florence (Salem, Mass.) had two kills and a pair of block assists. Junior Ambroisine Agbelor (Harlem, N.Y.) came off the bench to provide a kill and two blocks for SVC.
