Women’s Volleyball Splits Opening Day of VPI, Sweeping Johnson State 3-0 Before Falling 3-0 to Hosting St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College women's volleyball team split its opening day of the Victory Promotions Invitational Friday night, defeating Johnson State College 3-0 for its second straight win before being downed 3-0 by co-hosting St. Lawrence University.

SVC moved to 2-4 on the year with the share.

The Mountaineers next line up against SUNY Canton for the second time this year, first serve in the second day of the Invitational at Potsdam State slated for 2 p.m. Southern Vermont then plays Cégep André-Laurendeau out of Montreal, Quebec at 4 p.m. to conclude its stay in Upstate New York.


Southern Vermont 3 – Johnson State 0
SVC took the first set against JSC 25-12 before being extremely dominant and taking the second by a 25-6 margin. The Mountaineers then closed out their second-straight win with a 25-13 win in the third for the sweep.

Southern Vermont senior Brin Goldman (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) chalked up seven kills, registering only one attacking error on 17 swings for a .353 hitting percentage; she added four aces and six digs in the win. Freshman Sarah Billow (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) landed a match-best eight kills for SVC with only one error on 13 attempts for a .538 attack percentage; she also notched six aces and popped up five digs against the Badgers.

Mountaineer sophomore Lizzy Bench (St. Petersburg, Fla.) followed with six kills on 10 swings, adding two aces to her line. Sophomore setter Michelle Urkevich (Troy, N.Y.) assisted on 20 of the 27 SVC kills in the match, and she also had two kills, two digs, two blocks, and three service aces against JSC.          

SVC was extremely efficient from behind the line, tallying only six service errors on 74 total attempts while recording 16 total aces.


St. Lawrence 3 – Southern Vermont 0
The Saints swept the match with SVC on game scores of 25-12, 25-9, and 25-14.

Goldman registered two kills in the win while adding four digs and a service ace. Bench had a team-high 10 digs as Oropeza followed with nine. Urkevich chipped in with eight digs and a block assist in the effort.
