Women’s Volleyball Bested 3-0 by Hosting Roos in Canton Invitational

CANTON, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College women's volleyball team concluded its appearance at the 2016 SUNY Canton Invitational Saturday morning as the Mountaineers fell 3-0 to the hosts at Roos House.

Canton took the match in straight sets with frame scores of 25-8, 25-11, and 25-22.

SVC (0-3) is back in action on Wednesday, heading north to Castleton State University for the front end of a two-match season series; first serve is slated for 7 p.m.

Mountaineer senior captain Brin Goldman (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) led the team with nine kills, only committing a pair of hitting errors on 24 total attempts (.292); she also tallied a team-high 20 digs in the effort to come just three shy of her career-best. Bennington College freshman Gaby Oropeza (Riverside, Calif.) had 11 digs for the Mountaineers while SVC freshman Sarah Billow (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) registered three kills and six digs.

Southern Vermont sophomore Lizzy Bench (St. Petersburg, Fla.) tallied three kills, two digs and a service ace against the Kangaroos while classmate Michelle Urkevich (Troy, N.Y.) put up 15 assists to go with her three kills and three digs. Junior Julia Florence (Salem, Mass.) and freshman Tay Phillips (Stephentown, N.Y.) each landed a pair of kills on the morning.
