NORTON, Mass. – Southern Vermont College women's volleyball went 1-2 at the Wheaton College Invitational Saturday, losing to Western New England University and Wheaton 3-0 and and defeating Simmons College 3-1.
The Mountaineers are now 2-2 on the season.
Western New England 3, Southern Vermont 0
The Golden Bears defeated the Mountaineers with game set scores of 25-23, 25-13, and 25-14.
SVC junior Jessica Delgado (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Mountaineers with six kills, while junior Marissa Flores (Azusa, Calif.) and senior Carrie Baltazar (Whittier, Calif.) each chipped in three. Baltazar also had six assists, and sophomore Sheilani Kaleopa (Riverside, Calif.) led the team with nine.
WNEU sophomore Kelsey Amstrong (Groton, Conn.) led the team with eight kills while also putting up 13 digs. Sophomore Rachel Meachem (Niskayuna, N.Y.) totaled 13 assists, and junior Grace Kucharski (Avon, Conn.) had a team-high 18 digs.
Wheaton 3, Southern Vermont, 0
The Mountaineers dropped to Wheaton in their second match with game scores of 25-14, 25-20, and 25-22.
Delgado led all players with 11 kills in addition to her seven digs and two assists. Senior Vanessa Ruelas (Paramount, Calif.) recorded a team-high 14 digs while Kaleopa led the group with 11 assists while also tossing up two service aces.
The Lyons carried a balanced attack that saw four players record five or more kills. Sophomores Deidre Wilson (Aptos, Calif.) and Page Gustofson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) notched 15 assists apiece while recording six and four digs, respectively.
Southern Vermont 3, Simmons 1
Simmons took the first set, but the Mountaineers were able to come back and win three-straight sets to take the match 3-1 with set scores of 19-25, 25-18, 25-16, and 25-22.
Delgado again led all players with 16 kills, promptly landing a spot on the Wheaton Invitation All-Tournament Team; she also recorded five service aces. Baltazar had eight kills, and Kaleopa notched 23 assists in the win.
Shark sophomore Nicole Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.) led the team with 10 kills and added in seven digs. Freshman Morgan Kieon (North Attleboro, Mass.) assisted on 23 of the team's 38 kills, and freshman libero Alexandria Itasaka (Bradford, Mass.) notched a team-high 22 digs.
The Mountaineers look to the Victory Promotions Invitational next weekend, hosted by SUNY Potsdam and St. Lawrence University; Southern Vermont plays Friday night against Clarkson University (4 p.m.) and Norwich University (6 p.m.).
