Women’s Volleyball Breaks School Record for Wins

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- Wednesday night the Southern Vermont College Women's Volleyball team set a school record for the most wins in a single season; with a 3-0 victory over New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opponent Lesley University. A team that has already set numerous school and program records, added two more Wednesday with its first ever win against Lesley, and a school record 25 wins.

"It is good to get over the proverbial hump that no other program has ever done. I am humbled in the moment of knowing I have assembled the greatest volleyball team I have ever coached," said Head Coach Josh Stokes.  "This group has shown me, the school, and so many other various people that there is more talent in them beyond Volleyball. I could not be prouder."

The Mountaineers have now won 16 straight matches and 33 consecutive sets, with 25-15, 25-11, and 25-20 wins against Lesley. Southern Vermont hit .372 in the match and held the Lynx to a .075 clip. Danielle Healis and Alicia Manzo each had double digit kills for SVC, as Healis had 11 and Manzo had 10.  Manzo hit .556 in the contest, Healis hit .412, and Cindyline Sevilla and Jessica Alvarez each hit .429.

Senior captain, Hershey Canta set the offense with 31 assists and also contributed eight digs. Co-Captain, Joanna Hogue led the team with 10 digs for the Mountaineer defense.

"I am so proud of our team and how we stay so level-headed each game," said Hogue. "Our composure is the reason we have been so successful throughout the entire season."

The Lynx held early leads in all three sets, but each time Southern Vermont was able to rally for a victory. In game one the Mountaineers went on a 10-3 run, and a 14-0 run in game two while Alvarez was serving. The third set was Lesley's best chance, as they looked to be the first team to win a set off Stokes' club in the last 33 sets. The Lynx led at 5-1 and 8-6 but an 11-3 SVC run capped by a pair of Canta service aces opened up a 17-11 Mountaineer lead.

Southern Vermont will host Mitchell College in its pink out game and senior game Saturday afternoon. Lesley will travel to Becker for a tri-match Saturday.
