Women’s Volleyball Ties School Win Record

BENNINGTON, Vt.- It was a record setting day at Southern Vermont College on Saturday afternoon, as the Women's Volleyball team took down visiting Regis College 3-0 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action. The Mountaineers tied the school's all time win mark as they improved to 24-2. The 24th win tied the 2002-03 Men's Basketball team.

"It feels great to have this much success as a team," said Head Coach Josh Stokes. The team has won 15 straight matches and 30 consecutive sets. "We need to continue to improve each day we step on the court, and play our style of Volleyball," continued Stokes.

The Regis College Pride weren't about to let down against the high powered Mountaineer offense Saturday. In the first set the Pride raced out to a 7-2 lead. Southern Vermont quickly regained its composure and battled back to take a brief 8-7 lead, behind the serving of Cindyline Sevilla. After Regis tied the score at eight the two teams split the next two points. Then Mountaineer Vivian Delgado served the Mountaineers to a demanding 16-9 lead. The Pride didn't give in, and continued to battle but Southern Vermont held strong for a 25-20 opening set victory.

In the second game, with the score at 5-2 in favor of SVC, Sevilla's serve once again proved to be key. Sevilla served the Mountaineers to a 10-2 lead en route to a 25-13 SVC victory.

"Cindy has proven that she is very vital to our offense and defense. Both losses we had this season Cindy wasn't able to play, it just proves how important she is to our team," said Stokes.

In the final set of the match, SVC used a strong start to jump out to a 9-0 lead. SVC went on to win its 30th consecutive set 25-14.

Throughout the match Regis's Sara Gold held the Mountaineer offense in check with 24 digs. A high powered SVC offense hit .258 for the match as they swung 93 times. Julie Endara led the Pride offense with nine kills.

Southern Vermont's Danielle Healis finished a tremendous week as she once again hit above .500. In all four matches this week, the junior middle hit above .500, as she finished the week Saturday with a .571 clip. Healis once again committed no errors in the attacking game.

Hershey Canta recorded a double-double with 28 assists and 14 digs in Saturday's contest. Fellow captain Joanna Hogue had 15 digs in the victory. Sevilla led the Mountaineers service game with four aces. Reigning AVCA National Player of the Week Jessica Alvarez finished off another solid week with a .323 hitting percentage against the Pride.

Regis falls to 6-16 with the loss Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers will continue in NECC action when they travel to Lesley University Wednesday evening. The Pride will host Becker Wednesday night at 7:00PM.
