Blackjack: 21 Matches, 21 Straight Sets

BENNINGTON, Vt.- Tonight the Southern Vermont College Women's Volleyball team won its 21st game of the season and its 21st straight set when the Mountaineers beat visiting Elms College 3-0. The Mountaineers won in straight sets for the sixth game in a row, and also won three straight sets against Williams College after dropping the opening set in that match. In tonight's action the Mountaineers raced out to a 25-10 first game advantage, before winning the final two sets 25-13.

Southern Vermont was paced by junior middle Danielle Healis and opposite Alicia Manzo. Healis hit .692 in the match while Manzo connected on eight kills in 10 attempts. AVCA Division III National Player of the Week Jessica Alvarez smacked five kills for the Mountaineers in 10 attempts.

Hershey Canta was again the glue for the SVC offense with 24 assists, as Joanna Hogue led the defense with 13 digs.

"I love how well these girls play together," said Head Coach Josh Stokes.  

For Elms Stacy Croteau led the way with seven kills. Jennifer Rego had 10 assists for the Blazers while Croteau picked up 10 digs.

The Mountaineers hit a combined .265 in the match, and held the Blazers to a -.139 hitting percentage. Southern Vermont improved to 21-2 in 2011 and 3-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Elms dropped to 9-13 and 1-3 in NECC play. SVC will be on the road Thursday afternoon when they travel to Green Mountain College and Castleton. Elms will take on MCLA Thursday at 7:00PM.
