Volleyball Reaches 20 Win Plateau

BENNINGTON, Vt.- The Southern Vermont College Women's Volleyball team reached the 20 win plateau  Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Newbury College Nighthawks. It was only the second time in SVC athletics history that a team has won 20 or more games. The other season was Men's Basketball in 2002-03, that team went on to win its first round game in the NCAA tournament.

The 2011 Women's Volleyball team is about getting better each and every time they play. The 3-0 victory over Newbury was the programs 11th straight win and concluded a 3-0 week. The Mountaineers are 2-0 in the NECC and now 20-2 overall.

Southern Vermont junior outside hitter Jessica Alvarez led the team with a .611 hitting percentage, in Saturday's win. Alvarez connected for 13 kills on 18 attempts. Fellow Mountaineer Danielle Healis had a .455 hitting percentage in the contest, while Roxy Domines had 8 kills for SVC.

"Today, was about minimizing our errors and controlling the other teams offense. At the same time it was about us stepping up offensively and being able to maneuver around a bigger Newbury block," said Head Coach Josh Stokes.

The Nighthawk offense was led by Lauren Watson who had five kills in the match. Newbury had seven kills in the contest and two blocks. Tricica Corriveau and Regina Sibilia each had six digs for Newbury.

"Our defense has proven we are one of the strongest. It was great to have Jo Jo (Joanna Hogue) back in the lineup," said Stokes.

Southern Vermont will host Elms, Tuesday evening at the Mountaineer Athletic Center at 7:00PM.The Nighthawks will host NECC opponent Regis College Wednesday night at Pine Manor College.
