COBLESKILL, NY- For the first time in Southern Vermont College athletics history, an athletic team has reached a double digit win streak. The Southern Vermont College Women's Volleyball team won its 10th straight match on Thursday evening at SUNY Cobleskill. The Mountaineers won 3-0 by scores of 25-13, 25-10, and 25-20. With the win the Mountaineers improved to 19-2, while the Fighting Tigers dropped to 6-19.
"We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful group of young women that want nothing more than to play the game with each other and win," said Head Coach Josh Stokes. "Being the first program to have a 10 game winning streak reflects well upon how hard these ladies are working. The goal is one point at a time in every game of every match."
Southern Vermont senior setter, Hershey Canta turned in another outstanding performance with 22 assists, five service aces and five digs. The Mountaineers strong attack game was in full force again Thursday evening, as junior outside hitter Jessica Alvarez finished with 15 kills and junior middle Danielle Healis had 10 kills. Healis hit .588 for the match while Alvarez hit a stifling .542. Alvarez also had six service aces and seven digs while Healis had three blocks on the evening.
The Mountaineers finished the evening with 17 aces and only committed six serving errors. Defensively, the Mountaineers continued to hold opponents in check as SVC picked 31 digs and held the Fighting Tigers to 12 kills. Vivian Delgado had 10 digs in the win for Southern Vermont.
Cobleskill was led by freshman outside hitter Kady Porterfield who tallied five kills and seven digs in the contest. Freshman setter Casey Holbert finished with nine assists and six digs in the loss.
Southern Vermont will hold its conference opener Saturday afternoon at 3:00PM against Newbury College. The match will be held at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
