BENNINGTON, Vt.- Off of the biggest win in recent school history the Southern Vermont College Women's Volleyball team didn't disappoint its home fans. The Mountaineers hosted non-conference opponent Cobleskill at the Mountaineer Athletic Center Friday evening. Southern Vermont improved its record to 16-2 with a 3-0 victory.
Southern Vermont opened the match with a 25-15 win in the first set. At the on start the two teams played evenly as SVC only led 10-8 halfway through the first set. Southern Vermont then opened a five point margin while captain Hershey Canta served. The Mountaineers hit a stellar .389 in the first set.
In the second set Southern Vermont showed its dominance with a 25-10 win. Again the Mountaineers hit above .300 with a .333 hitting percentage. SVC connected on nine of 21 attacks while only making two errors.
In the final set the Fighting Tigers gave SVC all they could handle as they fell just short 23-25. The Mountaineers had eight attack errors while Cobleskill had nine, in the final set.
The SVC defense was stifling again tonight holding the Fighting Tigers to only 10 kills. It was an all around effort on the defensive side for SVC as Joanna Hogue led SVC with seven digs.
Southern Vermont's Alicia Manzo hit for a .429 hitting percentage, while Jessica Alvarez hit .300. Danielle Healis also connected on four of six attempts and Hershey Canta finished three of four.
Southern Vermont travels to Simmons College next Thursday for a non-conference match. SVC then starts conference play on October 4th at Becker College. The Fighting Tigers travel to Castleton State on Monday at 6:00PM.
