BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College women’s volleyball continued their winning ways improving to 7-4 today. The Mountaineers hosted a tri-match in the Mountaineer Athletic Center. SVC defeated NECC, Bay Path College and non-conference Johnson State College, 3-0.

In front of over 150 fans the Mountaineers won their first NECC match 25-15, 25-13 and 25-11. Ashley Veliz and Joanna Hogue led the way with 11 kills apiece in the match. Hogue also had 12 defensive digs and Veliz added seven digs. Setter, Hershey Canta led the team with five service aces and 23 assists. The win was the first NECC win for the Mountaineers since the 2007 season. The Mountaineers hit a season high .282 as a team on the match and did not allow the Wildcats to get more than three kills.

SVC stayed hot in their second game of the day winning easily in non-conference action 25-5, 25-12, 25-7 over the Badgers. The Mountaineers did not allow either team to get above 15 points and with the two wins in on a three game winning streak that will resonate through the NECC as Conference play begins. SVC was led by Veliz who had 10 kills and hit a hitting percentage of .471 was sending it past the Johnson State defenders with ease. Canta had eight aces and 19 assists and Hogue finished with nine aces and eight digs.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Saturday, October 2nd, when it hosts a tri-match versus NECC foe the Newbury College Nighthawks and non-conference opponent the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers. The matches are slated for 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. in the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
