UNION, N.J. – The Southern Vermont College women’s volleyball team cruised past Cooper Union College and St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn with two 3-0 victories Friday night at the Kean University Tournament. The Mountaineers were led by the juniors Ashliy Veliz, Rita Hall, and Hershey Canta. SVC improves to 2-2 with the wins.
Mountaineer Head Coach Joshua Stokes thought his girls did a remarkable job on the night as he stated, “I think the girls started their domino effect of wins.” With the recent additions of Veliz and Canta the squad has seen an amazing turnaround coming into the season with a stable front.
Veliz led SVC as she tallied 33 kills on the night, giving her 74 in four matches. She also led defensively with 38 digs. Hall and Canta were clutch from the service line as they tallied five and 11 aces respectively. Hall also had 17 digs and nine kills in the two matches. Canta’s setting experience has brought a whole new feel to the Mountaineer attack as she finished the day with 55 assists. Her total this season thus far is 106.
The Mountaineers are looking to improve more tomorrow as it faces Kean at 11:00 a.m. and St. Elizabeth University at 1:00 p.m.
