BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont women's volleyball team playing with only six players could not defeat their NECC rival Newbury, 2-10 overall (1-0 NECC). The Mountaineers come up short 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-17) in what was their most exciting match of the year.
The homecoming crowd of 114 created the perfect setting for the Mountaineers third Conference game of the season.
SVC put in 110% and they started to get into a solid rhythm right off the first serve. With a run of 5 points they looked to be within reach of winning their first game of the season.
Freshman Joa Claircius (Clermont FL, East Ridge HS) had a few digs, she finished with five overall, and a few assists. The first was to freshman Tasha Smith (Capital Heights, MD/Suitland HS) who executed the attack perfectly. Claircius also set up junior Kayleigh Moretto (Bow, NH/Bow HS) who sent it over the net for a kill.
In game two of the match the Mountaineers put up another tough stance with great serves from freshman Stephanie Berard (Manchester Center, VT/Mount Anthony Union HS). Moretto, one of the SVC captains, added a service ace and two digs in the effort, while Claircius had two kills and a one dig.
Junior and team captain Laura Sullivan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield HS) had several successful serves and a dig in game three of the match Saturday. Smith also played well in Southern Vermont's third and final effort with a kill set up by Moretto (two assists) and a towering block into the faces of the Newbury front three. The Mountaineer team effort was rounded out by sophomore Kathleen Babcock (Vernon, CT/Rockville HS) who had a service ace and moved the ball well.
The loss gives SVC a 0-12 record overall (0-3 NECC).
The Mountaineer women's volleyball team will be back on the road Sunday, October 5, against Green Mountain. The match starts at 2:00p.m.
