CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Southern Vermont women's volleyball team played well but could not rally to victory as they gave the NECC second place Elms College a run for their money in the Conference Tri-Match Saturday.

SVC lost to Elms 3-0 (25-11, 25-7, 25-10) and to Lesley University 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-12). The two losses gives Southern Vermont a 0-21 overall record (0-7 NECC).

In the first match the Mountaineers faced off against the Lynx (Lesley) and could not generate an offensive attack with only four total kills for the team.

Defensively SVC had a season high 18 total digs. Freshman Kristen Cummings (New Britain, CT/New Britain HS) and sophomore Julia Fagan (New Britain, CT/New Britain HS) led the way with five digs apiece; while junior Kayleigh Moretto (Bow, NH/Bow HS, junior Laura Sullivan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield HS), freshman Tasha Smith (Capital Heights, MD/Suitland HS), and sophomore Kathleen Babcock (Vernon, CT/Rockville HS) contributed two each to keep the Mountaineers alive.

The second match was close as Southern Vermont caught Elms off guard and nearly ran away with the win.

The Mountaineers had five aces, six blocks, ten kills, and 21 digs were the best numbers by far of the year for the struggling squad who is yet to find the win column.

Fagan led the way with five kills, six digs, and three blocks for SVC. Cummings had five assists, four digs, one, and one kill as the Mountaineers came closer and closer to victory.

In the end, Southern Vermont's 12 ball handling errors stifled its hopes for the win.

The Mountaineers are set to face off against in-state rival Castleton State College at home for their last game of the season, Tuesday, October 28. The action kicks off at 7:00 p.m.
