Mascari Grabs Second Straight NECC Player of the Week Nod

BENNINGTON, Vt. — For the second straight time, Southern Vermont College sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) has been named the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, this time for the period ending November 1, 2015 as announced by the league on Monday.

Mascari was solid in net for the Mountaineers last week, putting up 184 minutes of shutout action before letting her only goal allowed come in a Saturday overtime loss at Lesley University. She recorded her fifth shutout of the year in a Wednesday win at Bay Path University, and her lone goal given up at LU brought her goals against average down to a 0.90 in conference action through the regular season.

Wednesday’s shutout at Bay Path was Mascari’s third straight, and the additional 90 minutes of scoreless action in regulation at Lesley helped the sophomore post a 0.96 goals against average in the month of October. Her five total shutouts thus far this season tie the mark she set last year, giving her 10 on her career to rank just two shy of the all-time SVC record. Mascari currently holds a 1.29 GAA on the year, a number that would be the third-best for a Mountaineer in program history for a single season.

With Mascari’s Player of the Week honor last week, Southern Vermont has now taken three of the league’s top weekly award this year as senior defender Karina Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.) was named such on October 12.

The net minder and the third-seeded Mountaineers are set to host No. 6 Newbury College on Tuesday at 2 p.m. for an NECC first round playoff match.
